06/5/12 - Filleigh Away
First league game of the season not rained iff was away to Filleigh on a gorgeous sunny afternoon. We started cautiously on what was an 'interesting' wicket, going at two runs an over looked like a sensible approach. However with a bit of
late swing a few early wickets fell, then the Westleigh middle order collapsed to a slow off spinner who ended up taking 6-17.
With 80 all out our backs were against the wall and were further stuck when Filleigh reached 35-0 off 10 overs. A few bowling changes and the wickets started to fall with James Corry taking 4-15 and Mat Wilson 1-2 from 5 overs with plenty of close shouts and near misses for all. A late run out had Filleigh at 65-6 and it looked like an improbable win could be on the cards, but unfortunately a couple of boundaries put the game to bed.
Overall a good bowling performance for our first game but our fielding, batting and shot selection needs some serious improvement if we are to challenge for the title.
22/4/12 - Salford University Friendly
18 run win! Variable bounce, a bit of rain and a lot of wind - it must be early season cricket! With only a couple of players really getting in Salford restriced Westleigh to 119 with some great bowling by Telfer and Craigie along with some great catching - one at square leg by Wigley particulary stood out.
In reply Westleigh were unusually sharp in the field, with some amazing work behind the stumps (great keeper him, cough!) keeping the extra's down and some great tight fielding drying up the runs. Again, Telfer was the main thorn in the side taking full advantage of a drop by one of the safest pairs of hands on the pitch. His boundary laden 50 came up before being caught and bowled by Westleigh's captain.
Thanks for an enjoyable - if playing in a shower laden gale can be called enjoyable! - game with a great set of lads in the opposition, we wish you all the best for the season ahead.
Link to scorecard - with thanks to Salford Uni.
